The Subtle Effects of Tenure

I've been slowly resolving a two-day series of disagreements with Mentor. They're polite disagreements, but fairly forceful, and it is uncomfortable for me to argue. It's hard to let go of old habits (never argue, just agree, don't rock the boat, make everybody like you so that they'll support your tenure bid).

I have a longer story about this change in me that I'll tell another day, but here is a short excerpt from tonight.

Me: You know it is difficult for me to disagree with you but I think I am getting better at it.

Mentor: Tenure does wonders for one's voice!

So, so true. It changes how I interact with tenured people, and it changes how I interact with untenured people. It just changes things.
