I can tell how good a friend is by how much I feel like I need to clean the house before they come over. Whether they have kids matters, too. If they've got a couple of preschoolers I'm less worried about it, because I know their house will be just as messy as ours and plus ours will be a disaster by the time the visit is over anyway.
I love having our friends-with-baby over. They come over so much that we don't really feel like we need to go crazy with housecleaning. They'll understand. The kids love playing with the baby.
Tonight we've got new people without kids coming over. Major cleaning. They wouldn't understand the child-related detritus.
