26 Million Dollars

That's how much our little area-specific group has produced in grant money in the past 10 years. Will this be an argument that sways the dean at all to approve another position? I don't think so, but Mentor is trying. The dean knows that we pay for ourselves when she approves a position, but this hasn't resulted in her agreeing to new lines. We ask every year. I have finally given up. Mentor never gives up.

He also produced a table of the top 11 doctoral programs in our area (we are #5), the number of faculty in each program, and whether they're hiring this year. Out of the top 11, we are second to lowest in number of faculty at 4 faculty. This sort of fudges the numbers, since we do have two more affiliated faculty in different departments, but okay. The only program with fewer faculty is Berkeley, ranked #9, at 3 faculty. The highest number of faculty is 15, at the second-ranked program (AND they are hiring 2 more positions this year). Most programs have 6-8 faculty. I also don't think any of this will matter to the dean, but it has definitely served to depress me, if nothing else...
